2008 Final Qualifying
Test

Friday

1. Download PDF test and SAVE TO DISK  Download the encrypted test file here. Please make sure that you download to your local hard disk, and please do this in advance of the test starting time.

Download the encrypted test instructions and samples here. Decrypt this file using the password "acrobat". Let me know immediately if this does not work, as this is the same mechanism that you'll need for the actual test on Saturday.

The test is a PDF/Acrobat 5 file. You must have at least the Adobe Acrobat 5 reader (v5.1 not recommended). Download the latest Acrobat Reader here.

Saturday

2. Double Check  Make sure you've got a copy of the encrypted test saved on your computer, so you don't have to waste time downloading it again after the starting time.

3. Start Clock If your browser supports Javascript, then open the timer window, which will show the official test time and will start a countdown at midnight.

4. Start Test  On Saturday, Feb 9 at 11am EST (GMT-5), get the password here for the test.

Note: please ensure in advance that your browser can refresh the password page properly. (We understand that some AOL browsers, and perhaps others, have caching problems and do not work instantaneously, if at all.) Otherwise, you may not notice when the password page is updated.

Using Acrobat, decrypt and print the test file. Ensure that you print the first page first (if you want to start with the easy puzzle while the others are still printing). Have fun!

When evaluating the test results, I am looking at the time to solve individual puzzles, overall time, and of course accuracy. Please remember to note the starting and completion times (HH:MM:SS) for solving each of the seven puzzles in the spaces provided on the test. It is important that I have times for each puzzle.

6. Submission and Timestamp  When you have completed the test, use the Submission Page to submit the short "answer key" for each puzzle (each puzzle diagram will include an arrow indicating which eight or nine digits to enter). This will establish your test completion timestamp.

7. Send Full Test Via Fax or Email  Once you have submitted your answers via the Submission Form, then fax the full test to (650) 342-3688, or you may scan and email the full test to [email protected].

7. Problems  I can be reached at (650) 342-5470 (home) or (650) 302-4898 (cell).
